When it comes the time to install a clean copy of Windows 10, you typically use a USB bootable media to start the computer and proceed with the 'Windows Setup' wizard. However, if you have a device that has a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), instead of the legacy Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), it's important to use the correct media that includes support for the motherboard firmware type.

You can use several methods to create a media to install Windows 10 from USB if you have a newer firmware type. For instance, you can use the Media Creation Tool to download the installation files onto a removable drive with support for both UEFI and legacy BIOS. Or, you can use third-party tools like Rufus that makes it easy to create an installation media with support for UEFI.

How to create a Windows 10 UEFI boot media using Media Creation Tool

If you have a machine using UEFI, you can use the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB media to perform a clean installation or in-place upgrade of the Microsoft OS.

To create a bootable media, connect a USB flash drive of at least 8GB of space, and use these steps:

Creating boot media with Windows 10 ISO

To create a bootable media using an existing Windows 10 ISO file, connect a USB flash drive of at least 8GB of space, and use these steps:

  1. Open Rufus download page.

  2. Under the 'Download' section, click the latest release and save the file on your device.

After so many months of development, Windows 10 May 2020 Update is finally available for production devices.

But just like before, Microsoft is using a very cautious approach, so the new update is being rolled out in stages, which means that not everybody is getting it on day one.

However, for the time being, version 2004 isn’t pushed as an automatic update and users need to manually trigger the check for updates in Windows Update. If no blocks are put in place, the device should then be offered Windows 10 May 2020 Update, with a “Download and Install” button then allowing users to begin the update process itself.

“To ensure you continue to have a reliable, productive experience with your Windows 10 devices, we are taking a measured and phased approach to how we offer the May Update, initially limiting availability to those devices running Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 who seek the update via Windows Update,” Microsoft explains.

In other words, some are getting the update today and some are not, which makes total sense given that Microsoft thus buys more time to ensure a smoother transition to version 2004 for everyone.

But at the same time, Microsoft is also offering the Media Creation Tool, a dedicated app that comes with two very important features:

  • Update your Windows 10 PC to version 2004
  • Create installation media and updated another Windows 10 PC to version 2004

The way the Media Creation Tool was developed makes it just the right tool for pretty much everybody, as it uses a wizard-based approach to guide users throughout the entire process.

First and foremost, you need to download the latest Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 May 2020 Update – this is an essential step, as an older version of the app would provide you with a previous feature update for Windows 10.

After the download is complete, launch the Media Creation Tool to access the wizard I’ve told you.

The first step is choosing between the two options mentioned above. If you want to update your own PC to version 2004, select the first option and hit the next button.

When the process comes to an end, you can remove the bootable media and then use it on the other device to install the May 2020 Update.

What’s very important to know is that creating bootable media and then using it to update another computer could let you bypass upgrade blocks that Microsoft has put in place to prevent certain issues from hitting the device. This isn’t recommended, as the experience with the May 2020 Update could be substantially impacted.
